A literal rendering which simply reproduces the tortuous syntax, esoteric vocabulary and complex imagery of the original is of little help to the reader, and any attempt at a verse translation merely adds to the difficulties. It is for these reasons that this new bilingual version of Mallarmé's Poésies and Un Coup de Dés accompanies the French text with an expanded prose translation which aims above all at making the sense of the poems clear. As the title suggests, The Meaning of Mallarmé also includes an analysis of the poet’s thought and technique and an assessment of his poetic achievement.

Spreads of the French and English edition of the poem are interchanging throughout. As usual, the only blank page which is left intact, is the one verso to the phrase UN COUP DE DÉS, and facing JAMAIS.
