" « Hasard » or "chance" comes from the Arabic az-zahr which means "the die." The term evokes the random game where nothing is predetermined.  To throw the die is to submit to the irreversible stochastic trajectory where uncertainty reigns until the end of a result which imposes itself although it had a priori every chance of being another. According to Mallarmé, the poet must overcome, word by word, contingent and fortuitous vanity through an absolutely necessary work, capable of proving the meaning of its necessity. Irony of fate: I discovered the improbable reversibility of Un coup de dés in a circumstantial way, by consulting the famous iconoclastic reappropriation of Broodthaers whose image I happened to hold upside down..."  — Jérémie Bennequin
