Critical theorist Virginia A. La Charité writes that Stéphane Mallarmé’s Un Coup de dés exemplifies a primary field [of space] against which form, shape, color, [and] dimensions gain delineation and definition - a space that expresses a cartesian geometric continuum rather than a state of static linearity. In the past 50 years, many artists have produced exquisite dialogical renditions of Mallarmé’s vanguard text that explore the higher-dimensional characteristics of the poem (artists that include, but are not limited to, Marcel Broodthaers, Guido Molinari, and Michalis Pichler). In his debut book of poetry, un coup de dés jamais n’abolira le hasard: translations, artist Eric Zboya continues this dialogical exploration by further showcasing the “dimensional potentiality” in Mallarmé’s text through a computer-generated process he calls Algorithmic Translation. With the aid of graphic imaging software, this highly unique process transforms each letter, each mark of punctuation, each individual pixel into big bang bursts of frozen sound that propagate like cosmic sculptures through the space of the page. This new visual rendition acts as a Mallarméan companion guide for both the poetically-minded scholar and conceptually-minded artist in today’s avant-garde community.
